The Opioid Epidemic

Drug overdose is the leading cause of death for Americans under 50 years of age and the death rate continues to rise due to the opioid crisis, which has been declared a national emergency.

The opioid crisis presents unique challenges for funeral directors, from working with families whose loved one has died from an overdose to protecting themselves from harm when handling the body of an overdose victim during removal or embalming.

Be prepared! Understand the epidemic so you can better serve your families and protect yourself.

Gain essential information and ideas for confronting the opioid crisis from the funeral director's perspective:

Recorded October 31, 2017, during the 2017 NFDA International Convention & Expo.

Safety First!

While funeral directors and embalmers should always follow proper safety protocols when handling human remains, it has never been more essential.

Funeral directors should also be prepared for the unfortunate reality that an overdose could occur at the funeral home. Make sure all of your employees can recognize the signs and symptoms of opioid overdose and take it a step further with NARCAN admission staff training.

If you are interested in purchasing NARCAN:

  • Walgreens and CVS pharmacies are now carrying NARCAN. They offer discounts for first responders and volume purchases. Inquire with your local pharmacy for information on pricing and how to order

Grief Resources

Grief comes in all forms but grieving the death of a loved one from overdose can be especially difficult. Help ease the burden by offering grief resources specifically designed for this unique circumstance. Many resources exist; here are a few to help you begin:

Funeral service is a profession that is very rewarding but can be emotionally and physically draining. Caring for the families you serve - and for your family - is certainly important, but it is crucial that you make sure to take the time to care for yourself. The Work/Life Resource Program (EAP), one of the many benefits of NFDA membership, offers completely confidential resources, available 24/7, to help you through whatever difficult times you may encounter.
