The U.S. Army has announced the limited reintegration of caisson support into funeral services at Arlington National Cemetery, beginning the week of June 2, 2025.
During this initial phase, the caisson will be used as a conveyance for up to two funerals per day, not exceeding 10 per week, as the Army ensures the safe and sustainable return of the horses and their handlers to active service.
Eligibility during this phase includes service members killed in action, Medal of Honor and POW Medal recipients, and senior enlisted and commissioned officers. The reintegration follows a pause in caisson operations due to concerns over horse health and care.
