A Powerful Presence in Washington
The impact of NFDA members was undeniable:
- Nearly 200 NFDA members traveled to Washington, D.C., to advocate on behalf of grieving families and the profession
- They participated in almost 250 meetings with Members of Congress and their staff
- 28 participants from NFDA’s Meet the Mentors program proudly joined their peers on Capitol Hill
- Members elevated awareness about the issues facing funeral service professionals and the families they serve every day
- Through stories, facts and thoughtful engagement, NFDA members helped lawmakers understand how federal legislation affects funeral service
Lawmakers Took Notice
The feedback received from Congressional offices confirmed what NFDA already knew - its members made a lasting impression. Responses from meetings included:
The Consensual Donation & Research Integrity Act
- Members of Congress were surprised to learn that no federal regulations currently govern whole-body donation
- Some offices offered to co-sponsor the legislation after hearing from NFDA advocates
The Funeral Coverage Act
- Lawmakers noted how expanding HSA eligibility for funeral expenses would benefit many Americans
- This proposal received particularly strong support across the board
Veterans Funeral and Burial Legislation
- Staffers expressed a desire to become more involved in issues affecting veterans and their families
- NFDA-supported VA bills generated meaningful interest and follow-up discussions
A Job Well Done
NFDA received praise from Capitol Hill for the professionalism, preparedness and genuine passion its members brought to every meeting. Legislators and staff commented on how well NFDA advocates understood the issues and how effectively they represented the profession - a rare and commendable achievement in the fast-paced world of politics.
