NFDA joins the nation in honoring the remarkable legacy of leadership, humanitarian service and compassion of former United States President Jimmy Carter, who dedicated his life to advancing peace, democracy and public service.
While plans for his funeral are still being formalized, it is expected that he will lie in repose at the Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 4 and 5. His body will then be transported to Washington, D.C., where he will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol, with a state funeral taking place on January 9 at Washington National Cathedral. January 9 has also been declared a National Day of Mourning in Carter’s honor.
Following the state funeral, President Carter’s body will be transported to his hometown of Plains, Georgia, where he will be interred in a private ceremony beside his wife Rosalynn Carter, who died last year.
As an association dedicated to supporting funeral service professionals, NFDA recognizes the profound significance of memorializing leaders like President Carter through ceremonies that reflect their extraordinary lives and contributions. NFDA encourages its members to stay updated on details regarding President Carter’s funeral arrangements, as they may inspire best practices in planning meaningful tributes for community leaders and loved ones.
President Carter’s funeral will also serve as a powerful reminder to the public of the role funerals play in commemorating lives and bringing communities together in reflection and gratitude.
