Without a license, you would be in violation of federal copyright law by playing protected music for which you do not have a license. This applies whether the music is provided by you or the family. Penalties for unlicensed music can be severe:

• Up to $30,000 per song in damages
• Up to $150,000 per song if a jury determines the copyright infringement was “willful”* 
• Plus attorney’s fees

*If you previously purchased a music license, it would be difficult to argue any violation was not wilfull.
