Last week, NFDA continued to represent your interests in the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) review of formaldehyde (click here to learn more) by giving oral testimony to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM). 
 
Last week’s testimony comes on the heels of oral and written testimony presented by NFDA Senior Vice President of Advocacy Lesley Witter presented to both the NASEM and EPA in December. 

As part of its review of formaldehyde, the EPA released an external review draft of the agency’s IRIS (Integrated Risk Information System) Toxicological Review of Formaldehyde (Inhalation) in April 2022. NASEM is responsible for reviewing this report to ensure it is scientifically sound and based on the most current research. NASEM is seeking comments on this IRIS assessment of formaldehyde.
 
NFDA General Counsel Chris Farmer testified on behalf of NFDA and its members pointing out that, when drafting its draft formaldehyde assessment, the EPA’s review of existing research on formaldehyde was inadequate, which led to flawed conclusions about the risks posed by the chemical. 
 
Farmer also noted, “Funeral service professionals are well educated on the potential risks associated with formaldehyde. They are also extensively trained and equipped on how to use it safely. Formaldehyde remains the preferred preservative used in embalmings in the United States today, and is unrivaled in its ability to safely ensure that remains are preserved so that families are able to say goodbye to their loved ones.”
 
This EPA risk assessment is a multi-phase process that is expected to last until 2025, likely longer. We will keep you informed as we continue to engage in this multi-year formaldehyde risk assessment process on your behalf and that of the profession.
