Help Honor Vietnam Vets

December 03, 2018

Did you know, that our nation is in the midst of honoring the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War? You can be a part of this special nationwide event by hosting an event in your community.

The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration began on Memorial Day, May 28, 2012, and will conclude on Veterans Day, November 11, 2025. The dates were selected to coincide with the designation of Military Assistance Advisory Group-Vietnam (MAAG-V) on November 1, 1955, and the seizure of the SS Mayaguez on May 15, 1975, which marked the end of the Vietnam War.

The commemoration honors all veterans who served on active duty at any time between November 1, 1955, and May 15, 1975, regardless of location. The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that today there are seven million living Vietnam veterans and nine million families of those who served in this time frame. All who were called to serve – whether in-country, in-theater or who were stationed elsewhere – served honorably and admirably.

Among other objectives, the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration efforts seek to thank and honor Vietnam veterans and their families on behalf of the nation for their service and sacrifice.

Get Involved

While there are a number of events, many in the Washington, D.C.-area, you can get involved on a local level!

The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration wants to help local business and organizations recognize Vietnam veterans and their families in cities and towns across America.

If you are interested in being part of the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration and hosting an appreciation event in your community, visit www.vietnamwar50th.com and click on the “Commemorative Partner Program” link at the top of the page.

To become an official Commemorative Partner, organizations must submit an application and a signed Statement of Understanding. The approval process usually takes less than 30 days after you submit a complete application and signed Statement of Understanding. Partners are kept informed of their application status through electronic notifications. Once approved as a Partner, the Commemoration will provide organizations with a starter kit of materials for developing and implementing their programs. Questions regarding the Commemorative Partner Program application process can be directed to: whs.vnwar50th_cpp@mail.mil.
