Funeral homes continue to be a target for increasingly sophisticated scams. In many cases, scammers pose as grieving family members, reaching out by email or through a funeral home’s website contact form. These messages can appear legitimate, often including detailed requests, emotional language and even supporting documents designed to build trust.
While the scenarios may vary, the goal is the same: to initiate financial transactions or gain sensitive information under false pretenses.
Stay Vigilant
As always, NFDA encourages members to:
- Be cautious of unfamiliar or urgent requests, especially those involving third-party payments
- Verify identities before moving forward with arrangements
- Trust your instincts if something feels off
Report Fraud to the FTC
During NFDA’s recent meetings with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at the Advocacy Summit, this issue was raised directly. The FTC strongly encourages funeral professionals and the families they serve to report any suspected fraud attempts.
Reporting scams helps authorities track patterns, identify bad actors and protect others from similar schemes. Report fraud here: https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/.
Protect Your Firm and Your Families
Even when a scam is identified before any loss occurs, reporting it is an important step. Your report could help prevent another funeral home or a family in your community from being targeted. Staying informed and taking a moment to report suspicious activity can make a meaningful difference.
NFDA will continue to monitor trends and share updates to help you stay ahead of emerging threats.
