Mangano Family Funeral Homes Inc. (Deer Park) recently named Dominic Carella general manager of its funeral homes in Deer Park, Middle Island, and Riverhead. Having served communities as a licensed funeral director for more than 30 years, Carella has extensive experience in the profession.

Carella began his career at the age of 16 at his uncle’s funeral home, where he greeted guests and assisted with funeral operations. There, he learned how a family business is run and the positive impact that funeral directors can have on people’s lives. His desire to serve families followed him to the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service, where he earned his associate degree in mortuary science and embalming in 1987. He attained his license the following year.

During his career, Carella has worked at Gutterman’s, D’Esopo Funeral Chapel and Frank E. Campbell – The Funeral Chapel. Carella was the first funeral director called to ground zero after the September 11 terrorist attacks, and his team provided care for 75 families that lost loved ones during the tragic events of that fateful day. He handled the arrangements for Father Mychal Judge, chaplain of the New York City Fire Department and the first certified fatality of the 9/11 attacks. Judge was killed in the north-tower lobby while praying for victims and aiding rescuers.
