This Week In Connecticut With Dennis House on WTNH-TV
03/22/2026
Storm teammate, always on the lookout for the unexpected. On Sunday April 26, don't miss Connecticut children's superhero Sunday, in partnership with Ball for a cure, join us at CO park and weather spiel for a 5 k kids mile and community back register at Net at Children's Foundation dot Org, see what's new. Follow news 8 on Instagram. His house starts now. Good morning, everyone, I'm Dennis House. It is Super Bowl Sunday straight ahead. Today Governor Lamont delivers his annual State of the State address. Today, one of the Governor's Commissioners joins me. Department transportation Commissioner Garrett Caldo, plus, the Connecticut man tapped ahead. The National Funeral directors Association, Dan Ford is my guest and from funerals to football, we are also joined by the Wethersfield man, who is the game day host for the new England Patriots, Connor Gary and the brain behind the Connecticut Pizza Capital campaign is here. Anthony Anthony But first. The State has spent billions of dollars improving transportation in our state, with more changes to come. Some big ones. In fact, I sat down with Governor Lamont's point person in improving how we get around our great State. Joining us now is the Commissioner of the Department of Transportation, Garrett Caldo, and Commissioner good to see you on the program too. So what's new with the dot? I know we drive these highways every day hundreds of miles combined. What's the newest thing? So we are currently in our one of our busiest years ever in terms of projects going on on the roadway and on the rail road. But I think you know most people probably live through the recent snow we've had and the winter cold snap, so that's been a big part of our effort is snow removal continuing to remove snow from shoulders for medians to clear that space and to make it easier to pass through the roadways. How does the snow impact pack your construction projects? It basically causes a lot of the construction projects. You'll see some projects continue to be in construction. there is a significant slowdown from basically November till March. Usually more often it's because of the cold temperatures prevent some of the the asphalt plants from being open concrete from curing adequately. But you know we try to do as much construction work as we can without having to do those components. I talked about this before and we've discussed it with the Commission of the DMV and state police. Just the number of speeders, and I know that you've been working on efforts with them to slow people down. are they working? They are. I think they are working. So we did see a reduction in fatalities last year. So a few years ago in 2022 we had 356 people killed on our roadways last year we only had 275 people killed on our roadways. That's still 224 too many people who didn't make it home. To their family and loved ones. But it is an improvement, and a lot of that is because we've seen state police and our DNV partners do more enforcement on the roadside. are those effective? Those signs because I know it gives me pause when I see them 200 people killed on connected highways issue when you put them on. So we just doing that a couple years ago and I think it is having a slight impact. I think it makes people think and we've had parents come tell us hey, my. Kid asked me about that, and one parent actually said my daughter noticed that the number was below 3. It didn't start with a 3 this year at the end. Yeah, and work zone safety. You've lost workers over the years and are people heeding these warnings, the orange signs of slowdown? Not always no, unfortunately not, and so that's still a problem. It's still a problem. Our partners at state police have been doing some sting operations where they have troopers in our work zones and pulling people over who are not slowing down and moving over. We also are standing up later this year the work zone speed camera program we piloted a couple years ago. We're going to have a permanent program up and running this spring. Want to talk about when we had Congressman John Larson on here not too long ago, he talks about one of the biggest choke points is I? I not, and he's been advocating to get I 84 redone as it curves through Hartford, which I guess in today's day age you wouldn't build it that way, right it was a modern world, but you're stuck with it now you got to fix it. What's the solution? So we released our final plan, and so what we are doing is we're taking it tranches. The first piece is going to be to take route to extend it north through East Hartford and connect over the Connecticut river and connect with not up in the Meadows area of Hartford, OK, North Hartford, so they'll build a new bridge over the Connecticut river. And that will essentially become part of 84 for where 491 will meet, and so after that's built, then we can take 84 through Hartford and move it up north into where the currently the railroad goes OK, so we'll be able to basically combine the railroad and the highway in one location and lower it a little bit so we can cap over it and reconnect downtown Hartford with North end. there are a lot of buildings in the
