A Helpful Resource - Protecting Consumer Interests

National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA)

The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) is the leading funeral service organization dedicated to helping its members, as well as consumers, enhance their funeral experience. A funeral is a meaningful time in everyone’s life and often feelings are intensified due to the magnitude of losing a loved one. NFDA members take pride in providing high standards of service and instituting the most professional practices, yet we realize that consumer concerns may arise from time to time. If you have a concern regarding an experience with a funeral provider, NFDA would like you to know, there are several steps you can take to address the situation.

The first step in rectifying your problem should always be to contact the funeral director. Often, talking with the funeral director personally is the quickest and easiest way to address your issue. He or she may even be unaware of your concern. Calling or writing a letter specifically stating the problem and the resolution you’re seeking may be all you need to move forward. NFDA members want your experience with them to be a positive and meaningful one.

NFDA service representatives are also available to talk with consumers. They can provide answers to questions and help you resolve your funeral-related concerns. They are an excellent resource, giving you direction on what steps to take next, offering referrals and additional contact information. Contact a service representative by calling NFDA at 800-228-6332.

NFDA members proudly participate in an ethical obligation to promote and support the National Funeral Directors Association in its mission to enhance the quality of funeral service to families. The NFDA Code of Professional Conduct outlines various ethical and professional practices to which NFDA member funeral homes must adhere, and enforces them.

If you believe an NFDA member may have violated the Code, you must first call (not email) an NFDA service representative. You will then receive a form by mail, which you need to complete and sign in order for the complaint to be recorded and addressed. A complaint can be filed up to one year after the alleged incident. Your information will be kept confidential.

We hope that you have found this information helpful and that your concern is soon resolved. We believe our Code sets the bar high for quality service from our members; therefore, we recommend that you request the services of NFDA member funeral homes in your community. Serving as a resource for consumers and funeral providers, we welcome you to contact NFDA if you have any questions at 800-228-6332.
