  • The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) is the largest funeral service organization in the world, representing funeral service professionals since 1882.
  • NFDA sponsors the largest annual gathering of funeral directors and related caregivers in the world at its Annual Convention & Expo.
  • Founded in 1932, magazine leads all other funeral service journals with the largest total circulation and the lowest cost-per-thousand.

Who are NFDA Members?

NFDA membership is comprised of more than 13,500 funeral service professionals with nearly 9,000 funeral home owners (36% of the total number of funeral homes in the country), and approximately 5,000 funeral directors, embalmers, apprentices, mortuary school students, and retired funeral directors. Out of these funeral home owners:

  • More than 92% are independent, family-owned operations that do an average of 182 services a year.
  • 76% have attended an NFDA conference or convention in the past 18 months.
  • 39% are licensed to sell insurance.
  • 99% offer preneed counseling.
  • 70% offer insurance products.
  • 22% offer trusts.
  • 95% have been in funeral service for five years or longer, with the average funeral home remaining in the same family for more than 60 years.
  • More than 37% of NFDA members who own funeral homes own between 2-4 additional funeral home locations.
  • More than 8% of members who own funeral homes also own cemeteries.
  • The typical funeral home has 3.2 licensed funeral directors or embalmers.
