Elizabeth L. “Bobbi” Phillips

retired president of Elizabeth L. Phillips Funeral Home, Baltimore, Maryland, died December 28, 2011, at age 93. Phillips earned a diploma at the old Cortez Peters Business School and attended the University of Maryland, College Park and Morgan State University. In 1951, she opened her first funeral home with her husband, Arlington, and worked as a licensed funeral director. She also worked for the state’s Department of Human Resources’ Employment Security Administration, retiring in 1979.

In 1965, the couple bought a former bakery shop and adjoining row houses and partially razed them to build a new funeral home, the first to be constructed in Sandtown for many decades. Following her husband’s death in 1979, Phillips became president, renamed the funeral home Elizabeth L. Phillips Funeral Home. A supporter of education, she gave scholarships to needy students. She retired in 2001, and in 2009 was honored as a pioneer in the funeral industry by 100 Black Women of Funeral Service. She belonged to numerous professional organizations, including the National Funeral Directors and Morticians Association, and was named a life member of the Maryland State Funeral Directors Association. She is survived by goddaughter Stephanie.
