You Spoke, We Listened February 19, 2018 Like many of you, NFDA was shocked by the terrible shooting that took place at a high school in Parkland, FL. In the aftermath, a few news outlets carried a press conference that included the attorney general of the state of Florida. We heard from several members who were concerned about remarks that she made. During the press conference, the Attorney General noted that her office would be paying for the funerals of those who were killed, which is commendable. She also made a comment, alluding to funeral homes gouging victims’ families. A few NFDA members reached out indicating deep concern with this statement. It seems that her comment may have been more a case of a misspoken word than an intentional remark; after making the “gouging” comment, she went on to speak of how her office worked very well with funeral homes after the shooting at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. We listened carefully to our members’ feedback and, this week, will be sending a letter indicating your concerns. We plan to highlight the ways in which NFDA members have stood in the face of national tragedies, providing unconditional support and comfort to families and communities that have suffered from national tragedies. Funeral directors work tirelessly to ensure that every family impacted by tragedy has an opportunity to celebrate the life of their loved one. This includes often working long hours and offering funeral and memorial services either at a discount or at no charge. However, in many cases, funeral directors are the unsung heroes who, in times of tragedy, are often not remembered for their contributions. We also plan to share with her a few grief and bereavement resources that may be of help to the families and community of Parkland as it heals.
