Johnnie Maurice Stewart

co-founder of Stewart Family Funeral Home, Tyler, Texas, died December 4, 2012, at age 80. Stewart attended Tyler Junior College and Landig College of Mortuary Science, earning his license in 1954. He retired in 2001 after 52 years as co-owner of Lloyd James Funeral Home, during which time he handled arrangements for many families, including heads of state and dignitaries. Not suited to retirement, Stewart opened Stewart Family Funeral Home in October 2004 with son Chris. In 2006, he received his 50-year recognition as a funeral director from the Texas Funeral Directors Association. In 2010, he received the East Texas Funeral Director of the Year award. He was a member of Rotary Club of Tyler, served as past president of the Tyler Parks Board and was a past president of the Optimist Club of Tyler. He is survived by wife Martha, sons Johnny and Chris, daughters Lynette and Lori, and five grandchildren.
