J. Willis Wells

60-year funeral director in Chestertown, Maryland, died October 7, 2012, at age 98. Wells’ grandfather, father and mother all held funeral directors licenses and operated the local funeral establishment. He graduated from Eckels Mortuary College in 1935 and took a position with Jesse Usilton in Chestertown. He also achieved certification from Wilmer Eye Institute to perform eye enucleations. Wells helped found the Kent and Queen Anne’s Rescue Squad, Kent County Chapter of the American Red Cross and was a life member of the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Co., serving as past president and board member. He also served on the advisory board for Maryland National Bank and Second National Bank, the Maryland State Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers, Delmarva Funeral Service Association, Kent County Farm Bureau, Chester River Yacht and Country Club, Chestertown Town Council and helped organize the Sea Scouts and Boy Scouts Troop #130. He is survived by daughters Bonnie and Iola; their half-brother, Don; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
