Groome Mears Jr.

funeral director with Parsell Funeral Homes, Lewes, Delaware, died July 30, 2012, at age 87. Mears attended Eckels College of Embalming and served as a corpsman with the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his service, Mears began working in the funeral profession with Mealey and Spicer-Mullikin funeral homes in Wilmington. In 1947, he opened his own funeral home in Middletown, Delaware, and continued to operate it until his retirement in 1992. During this time, Mears was director of the former Middletown Volunteer Firemen’s band. After his retirement, Mears moved with his wife to the Lewes area and had been a funeral director on staff with Parsell since 1998. He is preceded in death by first wife Patricia. He is survived by wife Rosann; sons Groome III and John; daughters Gretchen, Katharine and Martha; step-daughter Holly; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
