John L. Showalter

president of Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Chapels, Connersville and Liberty, Indiana, and College Corner, Ohio, died December 5, 2011, at age 70. Showalter attended Ball State University and graduated from Indiana College of Mortuary Science. He was a recognized leader in his profession and developed several new ethical funeral director models, many of which are still in practice today. Showalter was a former district director for the Indiana Funeral Directors Association. He also started the first Union County EMT unit by successfully completing a fundraiser to purchase an ambulance, an accomplishment that earned him Jaycee of the Year, State Project of the Year Award and National Runner-up.

He is survived by former wife Judith; children Julianne, Jan, J.B. and Jill; and seven grandchildren.
