former owner of Schad Funeral Homes, now Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services, Melrose, Minnesota, died December 5, 2011, at age 80. Schad served in the U.S. Army and attended State Cloud State University and the University of Minnesota, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in mortuary science. He began work as a funeral director at Werness Brothers Funeral Home in Minneapolis and then Evans-Nordby Funeral Home in Osseo.
In 1966, Schad moved to Melrose and began serving the community and surrounding areas as a funeral director. He later expanded Schad Funeral Homes to include locations in Grey Eagle, Sauk Centre and Freeport. In 1993, the funeral homes were sold to Pat and Sue Patton, and Schad continued to work there until his retirement from full-time funeral directing in 1995. Over the past 16 years, he worked at the funeral home whenever he was needed, including participating in the annual Service of Remembrance. Schad was a past president of the Melrose Chamber of Commerce and longtime member of the Minnesota Funeral Directors Association, serving as president of the association from 1986-87.
He is survived by wife Mary; children Julie, Joe, Mike and Patrick; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
