Gary Morrison

Oklahoma funeral director, died August 29, 2011, at age 69. Morrison began his career in funeral service in high school in Kansas, working for his uncle’s funeral home. He served his apprenticeship in Oklahoma and graduated from Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science in 1967. Morrison moved in 1969 to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and was employed as manager of a large funeral home. In July 1978, he moved to Wakita, Oklahoma, and purchased Thomas Funeral Home and Furniture Co., later changing the name to Morrison Funeral Service. In 1983, he sold the business to pursue his goal of becoming an independent funeral contractor for different funeral homes in and out of Oklahoma. He was most recently employed as funeral director in charge at Goodwin Funeral Home in Cherokee and assisted Wilson Funeral Home in Pond Creek. Morrison was past secretary and member of the Wakita Volunteer Fire Department, past member of the Wakita Community Health Center Board and Wakita Town Board of Trustees. He is survived by ex-wife and companion Kathy Morrison, daughter Victoria, two grandsons, sister Vonnie, two step-sisters and three half-brothers.
