Federal Government Switches to Electronic Benefits Payments

Posted: April 29, 2013

As of March 1, 2013, the U.S. Department of Treasury no longer issues federal benefit payments and non-tax payments by check. This will affect those who still receive their Social Security, Veteran's Administration and other federal benefits by check.

The Treasury developed the website www.GoDirect.org to educate benefit recipients about the transition to electronic federal benefit payments. Federal benefit beneficiaries have the choice of receiving their benefits by direct deposit, which is the Treasury Department's preferred payment method for people with bank accounts, or the Direct Express® Debit MasterCard® card.

If an individual has not switched to electronic payments, the Treasury Department will contact them to encourage compliance. The Treasury Department will continue this outreach until befit recipients are in compliance with the law; exceptions will be granted only in rare circumstances.

Please share this information with people you know, including families you serve, who receive Social Security, Veteran's Administration and other federal benefits by check.
