The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recently shared information with NFDA about how funeral directors can obtain burial flags for the funeral of a veteran.
More than 2,000 flags are issued daily by post offices nationwide, on behalf of the VA. As good stewards and to ensure this benefit is provided to only those who are eligible, the VA requires that a DD214 (or equivalent) be attached with a burial flag application form before the post office issues the flag.
Post office locations do not have access to the same electronic resources that VA staff have access to; therefore, they rely on paper supporting documents such as a DD214 to verify eligibility for the burial flag benefit at time of request by the funeral home.
It should be noted that the issue of a flag may not be delayed or refused because appropriate documentation is not available at the time of request. If a family does not have a copy of the military report of separation, you should contact your County Veterans Service Officer for assistance. You may also contact the VA at 314-801-0800 for assistance with obtaining a DD214.
